A few interesting statistics for you from a great article I will link below:
- There are 38 million home-based businesses in the United States
- Home-based companies are generating big bucks — with total annual revenue of $427 billion per year. And 20 percent of home-based businesses make $100K-$500K per year.
- 70 percent of home-based businesses are successful within three years of founding, compared with only 30 percent of regular businesses
- 44 percent of home based businesses are started for less than $5,000
- 70 percent of Americans would prefer to be self-employed, and a new home-based business is started every 12 seconds
- 68 percent of women business owners are still running their businesses from home after 3.5 years, compared to just 53 percent of men
I know I fall into that statistic of 70% of Americans who prefer to be self employed. If you know me or read about me on my new blog, you may know that my background is in chemical engineering and the corporate chemical industry.
Which was good to me… for a while.
I went the traditional route. My grandparents drilled into my head:
You WILL get a good education.
You WILL get a good job.
THEN you will get married, start a family, get the white picket fence…
Grandma & Grandpa Arnold, constantly from about age 2-22
So… I did what I was told. I went off to engineering school because I dug math & science, particularly chemistry. Got myself a chemical engineering degree, corporate chemical career, and an MBA which the company paid for. Cool.
And… BURNOUT HIT. BURNED. TO. A. CRISP.
By the end of my 18 year career I was in global marketing for said chemical company. Traveling the world, big trips to Europe and South America. I was expected to work practically around the clock. 6am meetings with Asia, night meetings, overnight flights, land and go to meetings with no sleep.
I was getting sick all the time. My adrenals were shot. My husband was watching me suffer.
CAN YOU RELATE???
Enough about me. I tend to drone on about myself and am learning not to. Learning to help others.
Long story short –> I QUIT the corporate grind. Started a small business years ago trying to teach people to improve their diets & health. I did everything wrong. Evangelized. Know-it-all. Didn’t get any training in how to run a small business or learn from others who were successfully self employed. Tried to do it all on my own.
^^^ Recipe for failure right there.
This time I am learning, growing, reaching out for help. Educating myself. Learning from successfully self employed people.
Are you interested in being self employed? Putting together a plan to leave a job you hate? Avoiding burnout?
I may be a few steps ahead on the path and would love to help you in any way I can. Leave a comment below, share your story. I would love to give you any advice & tips I have that may help.
I told you I drone on… (I get it from my Dad’s side of the family). I will end here and know that I have a brand spanking new blog and can share more in many more blog articles to come. Just know that I am growing a new home based wellness business and plan to share the whole process with y’all as I move along. I have started sharing on my YouTube channel as well. Just documenting moving through the process.
Oh, and HERE is that great article with all of the home based business statistics. If you are a visual person, all the stats are put together in a cool infographic at at the end.
